The P85 (Wraith) is the result of installing powerful, lightweight, all-aluminum liquid-cooled V8 engine technology into the solidly engineered Radial Rocket airframe. This combination aims to deliver exceptional performance, economy, simplicity, and utility.
The focus of the P85 (Wraith) is on providing a simple, relatively low-cost V8 firewall-forward powerplant option. The P85 (Wraith) cowling is designed around the LS series of high-performance V8 engines. The engine in the first P85 is a 402 CID LS2/LS3 hybrid, delivering 400+ HP to the propeller at 5000 crankshaft RPM. A 1.8:1 ratio PSRU (prop speed reduction unit) reduces the prop RPM to a maximum of 2800. This robust, single-mesh gearbox drives a Catto 3-blade, 80-inch diameter fixed-pitch propeller, offering a simpler, lighter, and more cost-effective alternative to a constant-speed setup.
Contributing to the goal of simplicity is single-lever power management, eliminating the need for mixture or prop controls. This is achieved through electronic fuel injection controlled by an ECU.
